Exú Bobolete, sculpture, 2023
A fan fiction and worldbuilding project that proposes a queer extension of Brazilian folk religion. Centered on a sculptural figure, the work resignifies Baby Bobolete—a Brazilian queer clown created by Caike Luna (1978–2021)—as an Exú. This project is born of the desire to build an afterlife for Luna's character, Bobolete. Not as homage alone, but as an operative presence within a living system of belief.
The statuette was developed in collaboration with other artists. I provided the initial design that turned into a clay sculpture by Lisa França, then and a series of 11 resin cast copies by Jefferson Perecin, then hand painted by Francine Kurzawe. Following the production of cult statues, I am working on an ongoing series of altar installations (firmezas). Accompanying printed materials offer new mythologies and rituals.
