Exú Bobolete, sculpture, 2023
A fan fiction and world building project that proposes new, queer mythology and rituals for Brazilian folk religion. I produced a statuette depicting Brazilian queer clown Baby Bobolete as an Exú, to be the center piece of a series of altar installations, or firmezas. Includes the distribution of print materials, with information about the new spirit and suggestions of devotional practice.
Created by the late Caike Luna (1978-2021), Bobolete appeared on television and theater from 2016 to 2020. It had the larger-than-life, force-of-nature quality of all great queer characters. When Luna passed, I decided to give the character some sort of afterlife in a context of sacred things.
I provided the initial design for the statuette to Lisa França, an artist who specializes in religious art. She created the original clay sculpture, replicated in resin by Jefferson Perecin. The 10 copies were hand-painted by Francine Kurzawe.
