The Broad Without Walls
April 2012 · East Lansing, Michigan, USA · Urban interventions and public art
Curated by Zé Kielwagen, credited in contemporary documents as Jefferson Kielwagen. Presented by the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University.
Before the museum’s new building opened, The Broad Without Walls brought an exhibition into the streets and public settings of East Lansing. An open call invited Michigan artists to propose interventions across media. Projects worked with storefronts, outdoor gathering places, and the university environment, making the city itself the setting for encounters with contemporary art.
The program joined an institutional invitation to the practical and interpretive demands of working beyond a museum’s rooms. Temporary installations and performances invited people to reconsider places they already used.
