Hoes, sculpture, since 2009

First conceived in 2009, these works displace a tool associated with labor and extraction, transforming it into a tactile surface that invites sensual interaction. Through this shift in material and context, the hoe oscillates between utility and ornament, violence and softness, work and pleasure. The gesture operates through minimal intervention, allowing the object’s form to carry its own symbolic tension while opening it to new modes of engagement.
Developed in 2009 for a group exhibition in Joinville, Brazil, the series has circulated across different contexts, including extended display within a local LGBTQ+ dance club - where it became subject to repeated attempts of theft. Subsequent iterations have continued to rework the object, including a series produced for a solo exhibition at Sala Edi Bahlod, Universidade do Extremo Sul Catarinense (UNESC), in Criciúma, Brazil (2022), curated by Maurício Bittencourt.
