FACEBOOK TRANSITION TUTORIAL — agitprop campaign, 2012–2013
A multilingual agitprop campaign used one-page Facebook tutorials and street pamphlets to frame gender as something users could actively define within digital and public space.
Through a dedicated page, the project circulated one-page “Facebook sex-change tutorials” explaining how users could change the gender displayed on their profiles. Published in Portuguese, Spanish, and English, the tutorials adopted the familiar format of technical instructions to frame gender as something users could actively define within a digital system. In December 2013, the campaign moved offline during Semana de Ocupação Urbana in Criciúma, Brazil, where an updated tutorial was distributed to pedestrians as a printed pamphlet. Moving between interface instructions and street distribution, the project connected digital identity, self-definition, and public space.
