Exú Bobolete, 2023
This project was inspired by Baby Bobolete, an infamous yet endearing, queer, comedic character created by Caike Luna (1978-2021). Luna performed Bobolete from 2016 to 2020, first on TV and then onto the theater. When the actor passed away, in 2021, I decided to give this character some sort of afterlife.
I turned Bobolete into an Eshu, hoping to graft it into the context of sacred things. I provided an initial design to Lisa França, an artist based in São Paulo who specializes in religious art; she created the original clay sculpture, which we then replicated in resin, producing 10 copies. The copies were hand-painted by Francine Kurzawe.
A queer intervention in Brazilian folk religion. I produced a series of cult statuettes representing a gay variation of Eshu, and installed the first one in the National Umbanda Sanctuary in July of 2023. Others remain to be installed, in locations TBD.
