AWARDS

Best Documentary Short, The Artist’s Forum - Festival of the Moving Image, NYC.

Best Documentary Award, Brighton & Hove Pride Film Festival 2021. “This film is incredibly powerful and it breaks new boundaries in our understanding of LGBT+ life in non-western cultures. It really is an insight into a world that most of us do not know even exists.” Peter Tatchell, guest judge and human rights activist.

Mejor Cortometraje Documental Extranjero, International Queer Film Festival Playa Del Carmen, Mexico.

In Haiti, men perceived as feminine are known as masisi. The word is often used as a slur on gay men, transvestites and queer or non-binary folks. It doesn’t translate well and does not correspon to any of the letters in the LGBTQIAP+ acronym.

In Masisi Wouj, Haitian artist and activist Sanba Yonel speaks of the plight of the masisi who, faced with prejudice and hostility, find shelter in the religious context of Vodou. In a series of performances that combine elements of Vodou and drag, Masisi Wouj creates a queer tribute to the gods.
